Answer:
Rathnam was an educated man who lived in a village where the caste system was still followed. They performed a ritual where a Dalit caste would wash the feet of priests and would take a bath in the water. Ratham's family did this ritual and when his turn came he refused as he was an educated man. This angered the higher cast and for revenge, they burned his hut. He and his mother barely survived. After this incident, he filed a complaint against the ritual. the ritual was banned and this made him the hero of the town.
