Rehmat,the kabuliwala, is the main character of the story.The narrator describes him as a huge man ,wearing  soiled clothes of his place and a tall turban.He always carries a bag on his back and boxes of grapes on his hand. He belongs to Kabul in Afghanistan.

Why  he was putten behind bars ?

The kabuliwala is rather short tempered.He sells his things on credit and and collects his payment before returning home.

When one of his customer denies having brought of rampuri shawl from him and does not pay him his due, he loses his temper ,fights with him and stabs him.. And was taken by police .
