They were cousins. Both were Sakyan (skt: Ikshvaku) princes who became monks. Devdutt was originally a follower of Siddhartha, the Buddha, but later grew envious of him and founded his own order which rivaled Buddha’s. He also tried to get Buddha killed by releasing a drunken elephant on him but Buddha was able to subdue the elephant.

When Chinese Buddhist monk Faxian travelled to India about 800–900 years later , he still found the order founded by Devdutt to be around.
