The full name of RK Narayan (October 10, 1906 - May 13, 2001) was Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Iyer Narayanaswamy. Narayan is considered among the three greatest novelists among Indian writers of English literature . His name along with Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao is famous as 'Brihattrayi' in the early times of Indian English writing. Adopting mainly novel and storytelling , he has set a creative record through his serious realism , expressing the saga of human rise and fall in various levels and form.
He is also taken by adding the traditional family title 'Iyer' to it. Narayan's father was a Tamil teacher, who spent most of his time in the quiet city of Mysore. Narayan, apart from working as a teacher and journalist for a very short time, devoted his entire life to writing.
RK Narayan lived in Yadavagiri in Mysore for nearly two decades. In 1990, he shifted to Chennai due to illness.
He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1960 for a novel guide composed by him.
