Robert Clive was firstly a clerk in the East India Company . He started building up small army units at the presidency settlements at Fort William in Bengal, Fort George in Madras and the Bombay castle by recruiting Indian soldiers to fight against the French army in 1747 . This info is related to the Carnatic wars fought between the French and the British during 1046-1763.
