His achievements included checking French Imperial ambitions on the Coromandel Coast and establishing EIC control over Bengal, thereby taking the first step towards establishing the British Raj, though he worked only as an agent of the East India Company, not the British government.

Answer:

Robert Clive was a privateer and the first governor general of India and head of EAST India company. He established British rule over a huge swath of se Asia and convinced the French after a couple of battles to leave India to them. He established British authority by overthrowing the ruler of the Bengal state which was richer than England. Arguably he caused several famines because of his taxes and other confiscations he put in to place. And he did all this as a person working for East India Company only and not the British government. He was in short a high handed individual. He and Hastings were 2 principal figures in early India. This is a very attenuated view of the history of Clive in India
