Sher Shah Suri, born Farīd Khān, referred to as Sher Khan in the scholarly literature, popularly known also as Hazrat-i-Ala, was the founder of the Suri Empire in India, with its capital in Sasaram in modern-day Bihar. He introduced the currency of rupee.

• He built many mosques and also established a system of roads, the most famous of which is the Grand Trunk Road.
• Sher Shah Suri was the founder of the Sur dynasty in India. Born in 1486, he was the son of a jagirdar of Sasaram, Bihar.
- His original name was Farid.
- Leaving his home at the age of 15, he moved to Jaunpur.
- There he studied Arabic and Persian languages.
• He had very good administrative skills as a result of which he joined the service of the Mughal emperor Babur. In 1522, he joined the service of Bahar Khan, the then Governor of Bihar.
