Explanation:

'Sir Edward Albert Gait' was an administrator in the 'Indian Civil Service.' He became the Lieutenant Governor of the Bihar and Orissa Province of the Bengal Presidency in British India. Gandhiji spearheaded the Champaran movement after he heard of the hardships of the farmers.

Most of the cultivable land was held by the British and the Indian farmers had to work in those lands as tenants. They had to plant fifteen percent of the area with indigo and give the entire crop to the British landlords as rent. The farmers were exploited because of the sharecropping arrangement and to add to that they had to take loans after Germany started developing synthetic indigo and they had to give the British compensation.

Gandhiji on learning of the plight of the farmers took up their case and visited Champaran to gather details. Gandhiji was ordered an official notice to quit Champaran. He refused to leave and he was summoned to court.

Once the news spread that Gandhiji might be arrested, a large number of farmers gathered and protested. Taken aback by this development, Edward Gait ordered that the case against Gandhiji be dropped.

This was the role that Edward Gait played.
