Mohan Lal was a proud middle-aged man who was ashamed to be an Indian. He studied in Oxford University and adopted the British culture very much. He always tried to speak in English or in Anglicized Hindustani and to dress as if a high ranked British official. He used to fill the cross word puzzles of newspapers, which he did for showing his immense knowledge in English. He always loved to compare himself with English man and tried to get company with British people. Every object of India is inefficient, dirty and indifferent to him. But Mohan Lal, a blind follower of the English culture ultimately he suffered at the hands of two British soldiers whom he admired so much. He lost his real identity. He proved himself neither a British nor an Indian
