Adolfo Suárez was the first democratically elected prime minister of the post-Franco government. He was appointed by King Juan Carlos on 3 July 1976. By count, he was the 138th prime minister overall. In the Spanish general election, 1977 his position as prime minister was confirmed by a vote.
