The French was under an Autocratic ruler or Monarchy ruled by King Louis XVI, but he was a despotic ruler which means he never think of the welfare of people and aslo the problems faced by the third estate. He found a empty treasury due to the compensation they had to pay during the independence of thirteen colonies of America.
The people were very upset of this kind of goverment. Hence, many philosophers came who inspired the people by their writings like Jean Jacques Rosseau, Montesique, John Locke etc. Rosseau focused on a type of giverment where people have equal rights to oppose the goverment if they are not satisfied. In simpler terms, a government ruled by the people, of the people and for the people.
This enecourged the people to fight for their rights. Thus, on July 14th, 1789 the French Revolution took place. People burnt the Bastille and the king and queen were jailed and later punished to death. The French Revolution was the first ever step taken by the people which also resulted in the development of Nationalism towards the nation.
