The man who speaks the most lines is how you can determine the chief character of the play.

But there are multiple plays where this rule doesn't apply. E.g., Othello.

While Hazlitt's always sticks to discuss the opening scene of Othello which undoubtedly includes the methods and observations about the lead characters and not just the ones who are in the background.
