   Henry Dunant was the first foreigner to have been honoured on the Indian stamp.The stamp was issued in the year 1957 on the International Red Cross and Conference (IRCC) occasion. The movement was initiated in the year 1863 and was stirred by Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman. The sufferings of thousands of men in the Battle of Solferino in the year 1859 distressed Dunant.

   Numerous people died due to lack of proper care. Henry Duranthad then proposed building national relief societies, made up of volunteers, trained in peacetime to provide impartial and neutralaid to relieve suffering during war. In retort to these thoughts, a committee was set-up in Geneva. The instituting charter of the Red Cross was chalked out in the year 1863. Dunant also had then proposed that nations adopt a global agreement that recognised the status of medical services and of the injured on the battlefield.

   This agreement, the original Geneva Convention was adopted in the year 1864.
