Answer:

Although it was Robert Clive who won the Battle of Plassey, and began the British rule in India, he was not the first Governor-General. The Governor-General of Bengal was officially created by the Regulating Act of 1773. Under this Act, Warren Hastings became the first Governor-General of Bengal - from 1775 to 1783.

The first Governor-General of British India was Lord William Bentinck, and the first Governor-General of the Dominion of India was Louis, Lord Mountbatten.
