The first Indian King depicted on an Indian stamp was (a) Chandragupta Maurya:
- During Chandragupta Maurya's reign, the Mauryan Empire was founded. Because of his courage and charismatic personality, he became a leader. He greatly benefited from Chanakya's Arthashastra regarding the creation of an army and various tactics and methods to be used for the growth of the kingdom. During Chandragupta's reign, he served as the prime minister.
- His empire stretched from Myanmar, Afghanistan, Jammu and Kashmir all the way up to the Deccan Plateau. When he was ruling and governing, he attempted to unite the major portions of India's subcontinent.
- A growing interest in Jainism led him to pass his rule to his son Bindusara, and he went to the caves in the southern part of the country. After performing meditation there for over four weeks, he succumbed to starvation due to a lack of food and water.
- His efforts in unifying India made him a different ruler and for this, he was depicted on an Indian stamp. He was the first Indian king to be depicted.
