Who was the first Indian to travel into space?

Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian astronaut to travel in space. He was a former Indian Air Force pilot who flew into space by travelling in Soyuz - T11. He got his space training from the Soviet Union. When someone asked how India looked from space, he replied ' Sare Jahan Se Acha'. He achieved this distinct landmark on April 2, 1984.
