The first Mughal ruler to introduce prohibition of sati was Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar, commonly known as Akbar the Great.


Under his rule, the Mughal empire included nearly all of the Indian subcontinent north of the Godavari river.


He introduced various social reforms, which included, but not limited to prohibiting sati, legalizing widow remarriage and the raising the age of marriage.
