Shakuntala proved to be the first link with the authentic India. When Georg Forster (1754-1794) published his very popular English translation of Shakuntala from Jones' English version in 1791, he retained the poetic verse in the Prologue, but rendered the rest of the poetic play into prose. He sent it to Herder.
