Kalpana Chawla was the first woman astronaut of Indian origin.
Explanation:
Kalpana Chawla was the first woman astronaut of Indian descent to go to space.
Her first flight was on Space Shuttle Columbia as mission specialist and robotic arm operator, in 1997.
In 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia unfortunately disintegrated during its return, after entering the Earth's atmosphere. Kalpana Chawla died in this accident, along with six other crew members. She spent 336 hours in space during her research mission.
Posthumously, Chawla was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. She is a true inspiration and a national hero in India.
