Maharaja Chhatrapati Shivaji was the first Maratta ruler to introduce Peshwa system in the Indian Subcontinent. Peshwa is literally equal to the power of present Prime Minister.
Even though they were introduced by the Chhattrapaties, Peshwas became de Facto rulers by making Chhatrapaties as nominal.
According to the records, all the peshwas who belong to the the rule of Shivaji and Shambaji were from Deshatha Brahmin Community and the first Peshwa was Moropant Pingle.
