Emperor Vijayalaya was the founder of the Chola dynasty.

Vijayalaya was the very first feudatory of the Pallavas who belonged to Kanchi and he is renowned in history for captivating Tanjore in 850 A.D.

He kept his mark there by developing a temple of Goddess Durga, known as Nishumbhasudini there.

Vijayalaya was later succedded by emperor Aditya I to the throne.
