First Governor General of British India was Lord William Bentinck from 1828 to 1835. He was also the last Governor General (GG) of Bengal. His designation changed due to the Charter Act or Saint Helena Act of 1833. He was the son of the Prime Minister of UK. He started his carrier as a soldier and then became the Governor of Madras for few years and was recalled back due to the Vellore Sepoy Mutiny of 1806. He became the GG of Bengal in 1828 and after the passage of Charter Act 1833, he became the GG of India.
