Lord Canning was the Governor General of India . when widow remarriage act was passed. On 16th July 1856 this act was passed. This act legalized marraige of widows in India.


This act was drafted by Lord Dalhousie. This Act came as a result of the campaign led by Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. This Act gave Hindu widows legal right to remarry on death of their husband.
