Interesting questions you asked! to answer this question we will need to go back almost 13th Centuries in Maharashtra, where Namdev lived.
Namdev, also pronounced as Namdeo, was a poet and a saint, similar to the Islamic Sufis of the era.
Just like sufis, he wrote influential and thought provoking poetry and became highly popular in India due to his Bhagans or devotional songs. Today, people from Hinduism and Sikhism both follow his teachings and Hindus even have a ritual in South Maharashtra, in his honour.
He is known to have brought numerous communities together including the Hindus and Muslims through his widespread fame, honour and widsom. He was one of the first saints who was popular among all sects and religions of Northern India

A poet saint named Namdev from Maharashtra is said to have existed as an influential saint in thirteen and fourteenth century. He composed hundreds of devotional songs, called abhangs, and he was popular among Hindus as well as Muslims. Mention of his abhangs also appears in Guru Granth Sahib. He believed in Vaishnavism and had a number of followers even after his death.
