Series of experiments performed by Ernest Rutherford provided data about the structure of atom.
- Rutherford performed the gold foil experiment.
- In this experiment, a beam of alpha particles is directed to the gold foil. The gold foil is surrounded by the detector plates coated with zinc sulphate to observe the scintillations.
- The observations were quite astonishing. A large number of particles passed through the atom indicating most of the atom is empty .
- Very few were deflected with large angles, showing that the positive charge is concentrated at the center and electrons revolving around it.
- This way, Rutherford's experiment gave evidence about the structure and nature of the atom.
