In 1905, during the viceroyalty of Lord Curzon (1899-1905), Bengal was divided into two separate provinces based on the pretexts of administrative convenience. the real purpose was however, to weaken in the feelings of nationalism in Bengal, then then one of the main centres of the Indian National movement.
