Yaksha was the God of Death – Yama Raj, who presided over hell and who was also Yudhishthira’s father.
Prior to going on exile, Yaksha, in the form of a crane, came in front of Yudhishthira and asked him several questions to confirm his sincerity and righteousness. When Yudhishthira answered all questions correctly, he was pleased and blessed them for the exile – for their safety and anonymity.
