Who were the Ahoms?

Ahom are the descendants of the ethnic Taipeople that accompanied the Tai prince into the Brahmaputra valley in 1228 and ruled the area for six centuries. Sukaphaa (Mong Mao prince ) and his followers established the Ahom kingdom and the Ahomdynasty ruled and expanded the kingdom until the British gained control of the region through the Treaty of Yandabo upon winning the First Anglo Burmese war in 1826.

Although modern Ahom people and their culture are a syncretic blend of the original Tai culture, the indigenous Tibeto-Burmans and Hinduism but many still follow original religion named “Fralung “ . There is no so called god in Ahom religion . For then “ fra” means nothing “fra” means everything. FRA symbolizes nature and its creation where as lung symbolizes Force .

King Suhungmung was first king to adopt Hindu name and his successor were called “Swargadeo “.

Tai Ahom traditionally speaks tai language but over time they adopted Assamese language.

They are the largest Mongoloid Community not only in Assam but in entire northeast region . Majority are found in upper Assam including present day Sibasagar , Dibrugarh , Tinisukia. They are also found in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh .

Answer:

Who are Tai Ahoms?

= Tai Ahoms were from Mong Mao Lung, Yunnan, China. They are Tai Mao/Tai Nua peoples who got admix with other ethnicities after coming to Assam. They mostly married Kachari people who were from Tibeto-Burman race. And the tribes they mostly married were Borahi-Chutia (Kha-lang) and Moran tribe people. The modern Tai Ahoms are mostly Bodo-Kachari/Kachari people and don't have Tai blood.

Ahomisation was an assimilation process in the former Ahom kingdom of Assam by which the people from different ethnic groups in the region became a part of what is now considered as the Ahom population.

• The first Tai Ahom king is Chaopha Siukapha/Sukapha.
