Alvars

Alwar were the Saints would you wanted to to Lord Vishnu. There was no discrimination on the basis of castes. Alvars included people from all over India, no matter to which castes they belonged.

Nayanars

Nayanars were the Saints who worshipped and were devoted to Lord Shiva. They basically belonged to Tamil Nadu.

Both the Alvars and Nayanars played a a major role in popularizing and influencing the Bhakti movement.
