The aalvars were Tamil poet-saints of South-India , who adopted devotion to the Hindu god Vishnu and Krishna ( vaishnavism) and are popular for their songs of longing and ecstasy.
The Nayanars were a group of 63 saints in 6th to 8th century who were devoted to the Hindu god Shiva in Tamilnadu.
