The Bolsheviks were the successful party of the Russian Revolution in 1917 led by Lenin and Trotsky.
From the weakest element of the Left wing political parties in early 1917 Lenin by sheer force of character managed to obtain the support of the disillusioned soldiers and sailors and the peasants and factory workers who were organised into Soviets (councils).
During August 1917 he set up the Military Revolutionary Committee in the Smolny Institute in Petrograd which grabbed power from the revolutionary Duma of Kerensky and succeded in eliminating all political opposition in that city.
