Three causes of civil war between the Bolsheviks and non-Bolsheviks were

1. The traditional powers in Russia, for example, the aristocracy and the landlords, had lost their political power following the capture of power by the Bolsheviks. These forces got together to resist the Bolsheviks.

2. Not just the traditional conservative forces represented by the aristocracy, even liberals and democrats opposed the Bolsheviks. The liberals were against the communist dictatorship that had been imposed by the Bolsheviks in Russia. Under the Bolsheviks, Russians could not have any of the democratic rights that people in Western Europe enjoyed. This created great resentment against them.

3. Many officers and generals from the Tsarist army also joined the war against the Bolsheviks because the Bolsheviks signed a peace treaty with Germany in which they surrendered significant portions of Russian territory to the Germans. This was regarded as humiliating by many army officers and, hence, they launched a war against the Bolsheviks
