The Chola Dynasty is one of the most popular dynastries of South India. They ruled over Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Their capital was at Tanjore or Thanjavur. The rock edicts of Ashoka contain references to the chola.

✴The reign of the Cholas began in the 9th century when they defeated the Pallavas to come into power. This rule stretched over for over five long centuries until the 13th century.

✒The Chola Empire was founded by Vijayalaya. He took over the Tanjore kingdom in the 8th century and led to the rise of the mighty Cholas by defeating the Pallavas. Tanjore was hence made the first capital of the eminent Chola Empire.

✴Two illustrations rulers of the dynasty were Rajaraja I and his son Rajendra who expanded the boundaries of the empire towards the north and also capturing sri lanka in south.

✒The chola rulers were worshippers of shiva but were tolerant to other religions too.

✴The chola art and culture along with architecture was remarkable.The temples had notable features in the form of- Vimana, Garba griha and gopurams. The most famous temples were Brihadeshwar Temple, And the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple.
