hey mate here is your answer^^
Dalit means 'oppressed'. So anyone who is oppressed by the society can be referred as Dalit but basically it is political name for untouchables. Schedule Caste (SC) is legal constitutional name for those earlier considered untouchables but the term Dalit also encompasses the Schedule Tribes (ST). So Dalit is the term used for both SC/ST.
Dalits were excluded from four fold Varna system and formed the unmentioned fifth Varna 'achhut' or untouchable. In ancient times they weren't allowed to enter the town area and were not touched because they were consider impure. They were given jobs upper castes considered impure like leatherwork, butchering, removal of waste, animal carcasses and human waste. Even today Dalits in small towns and villages work as manual labourers, cleaning latrines and sewers.
Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar is the first leader of modern India to have fought for equal rights for Dalits (and women). He himself was a Dalit and experienced discrimination through out his life but garnered respect from everyone as he changed his life with education, dedication and hardwork. The Dalit population considers him as their hero and worships him. These days you may come across various political parties claiming their rights on Babasaheb and that they follow him. Don't be fooled these are all political tantrums to generate vote banks out of the Dalit mass. These political parties hardly ever follow a word Babasaheb said.
