gomastha were the accountant like persons who were appointed by the British East India company only to procure produces from the weavers and to collect the taxes from them. they used to move to the village with peons and sepoys and punished and tortured those peasants who failed to pay the taxes in time. they had no long term relations with the village as they were from outside the village.

Gomasthas were people who was employed by the east india company to collect the cotton produced by the cotton weavers of indian..to avoid foreign competition east india company gave indian cotton weavers loans..this made sure that indian cotton weavers could only sent the cotton to east indian company.after taking the loan the indian weavers refused to sell their cotton because the east india company offered low prices.so gomasthas were sent to forcefully take the cotton produced by the indian weavers and beat them up if they refused
