For the purpose establishing direct control over the weavers in monopolizing trade ,the British  appointed Gomasthas who would supervise the weavers, collect supplies from them and examine the quality of the cloth . This eliminated the system of middlemen. These Gomasthas are paid servants of the company.

They have become important for the Britishers because it is through these Gomasthas ,the company can exercise the control over the weavers. It is the Gomasthas who regulated the work of the weavers and offered them advances and force them to work for the company
