The people of the third varna were called vaishyas. It included farmers, herders and traders. The farmers were involved in agriculture in the Mahajanapadas. They paid taxes on crops which was 1/6 th of what was produced. This was called bhaga or share.

Most of the work on the farms was done by dasas and dasis who were slave men and women, and landless agricultural labourers also known as kammakaras.
