Jacobins(jăk´əbĬnz), political club of theFrench Revolution. Formed in 1789 by the Breton deputies to the States-General, itwas reconstituted as the Societyof Friends of the Constitution after the revolutionary National Assembly moved (Oct., 1789) toParis. The club derived its popular name from the monastery of the Jacobins (Parisian name of Dominicans), where the members met. Their chief purpose was to concert their activity and to secure support for the group from elements outside the Assembly. Patriotic societies were formed in most French cities in affiliation with the Parisian club. The members were, for the mostpart, bourgeois and at first included such moderates as Honoré deMirabeau.

Answer:

Jacobins were the members of the Jacobins club which had derived its name from the St. Jacob in Paris. This club included people like – shopkeepers, artisans such as shoemakers, pastry cooks, watch-makers, printers, daily wage workers, etc. The role played by them for the emergence of Republic in France was:

• In order to look different from the fashionable section of the society who wore Knee breeches, they decided to wear long striped trousers.

• They also came to be known as the sans-culottes, which mean ‘those without knee breeches’. These men wore the red cap which was the symbol of liberty.

• The Jacobins participated in the revolt for the Parisians who were against the high prices of the food and shortage of supplies. Finally, they won the revolt and were granted Right to Vote by the Assembly.

• Also, Maximilian Robespierre who was the leader of the Jacobins club took measures to bring Republic in France. All those whom he considered enemies were imprisoned and Guillotined when they found guilty by the court. He introduced such laws which placed the maximum ceiling on wages and prices. They also rationed the meat and the bread. The prices of the grains were. People were made to eat equality bread.

• Equality was maintained through the speech and address like the traditional way of calling Monsieur (Sir), and Madame (Madam) was stopped, and all French men and women were Citoyen and Citoyenne (Citizen).
