the kalangs were tribal community of java . they were skilled forest cutters and shifting cultivators .they have great skill in building palaces and were so valuable in 1755 when the mataram kingdom of java spilt , the 6000 kalang families were equally divided in two kingdoms.

the kalangs worked under dutch ,when dutch began to gain control over forests in 1855.
