Larry vigil and Herb Seigler were the American and Swiss crewmen that the author had picked up from Cape Town to help them tackle the dangerous southern indian ocean.  

They both proved to be very useful to the author and his family, during their encounter with the storm.

Larry and Vigil helped Mary(author's wife) when the first gigantic wave hit. While the author was thrown overboard, the two crewmen kept pumping out water entering into the boat like madmen.

They helped the author fix the boat in the middle of a storm and kept pumping out water for nearly 36 hours.
