It was introduced by Lord Cornwallis in 1793. It was prevalent in 19% of British India which included the regions of Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Banaras region of Uttar Pradesh, and areas of North Karnataka. Under this system, zamindars were recognized as the owners of the land.
