Agricultural labourers were highly affceted by this famine. The economy was hit by inflation with no rise in wages of the agricultural labourers. Between 1939 and 1943, food grain prices rose by more than 300 percent, slightly outstripping the rate of inflation, whereas the wages of agricultural labourers rose by only 30 percent. Being hit by iflation sevral peasents commited suicide during this period.The urban Calcutta was least affted by the famine.
