Shanar or Nadan or Nadars refers to the Tamil caste of South India or Sri Lanka. They reside in the districts of Tuticorin, Kaniyakumari, Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar in South India and are an assortment of sub-castes and sub-tribes. They were mainly toddy traders and peasants who cultivated palmyra trees & jaggery. They worked mainly under Nair landlords.
