Firstly, Jains are not the followers of Mahavira. Mahavira (blessed/Bhagavan/Lord) was the last(24th) tirthankara of Jains. He united all the Sramana Sects who were believer in Jina Concept, also happen to be Vegan/Vegetarian/Atheist sects. Jina means a person who has conquered himself.
