Richard H. Ebright was born on 11 June 1959. His parents were  Richard Jerome Ebright and Jacqueline Katherine Ebright. His father died when he while he was in third grade. Ebright attended Harvard University to study biology  in 1981. In 1987, he received  a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from Harvard.

From  the year 1984 to the year  1987,he was a Junior Fellow of the Harvard Society of Fellows.

His mother played an important role in his life. His mother bought him cameras, telescopes, microscopes and other materials. His mother also took him out on trips.

His mother gave him a book called “The Travels of Monarch X.” The book, explained how monarch butterflies migrate to Central America. This book  helped him to discover the world of science.
