Gandharvas were the male guardians of the air, forests and mountains.

The Gandharvas in Hindu mythology were actually heavenly musicians and male counterparts of Apsaras. They were nature spirits like Nagas and used to perform in the divine court (God).

The reference of Gandharvas has been in Vedas and other later Hindu scriptures. There were various forms and descriptions of Gandharvas--Animals, Semi-human, bird etc.
