The Early Nationalists, also known as the Moderates, were a group of political leaders in India active between 1885 and 1905. Their emergence marked the beginning of the organised national movement in India.

The leaders who led the Congress and the National movement from 1885 to 1905 were called moderates because they were staunch believers in open-minded and 'moderate' politics

Answer:

the moderates adopted constitutional methods like as petitions and appeals. most of the appeals went unheeded, but the leaders took no steps to put their demands. Hence, these leaders came to be called moderates.
