The Mughals were a Timurid Muslim dynasty from persia. Their first emperor was Babar, who conquered the Sultanate of Delhi in 1526. By 1700 the Mughals ruled most of the Indian subcontinent, but went into decline after the death of emperor Aurangzeb (died 1707), whose expensive wars strained the treasury and made more enemies than friends without expanding the empire significantly.
