Most of the common people of Germany were indifferent to Nazi barbarities. We should note that Nazi barbarities were targeted against well defined racial groups like Jews and the Slavic people of Eastern Europe. In the initial years of Nazi rule, the majority of the German people actually benefited from the economic improvement that took place under the Nazis. Racial prejudice against Jews were also fairly deep rooted among Germans. Hence, they did not see any reason to actively oppose the barbarities of the Nazis.

There were, of course, honourable exceptions even among the Germans who actively opposed the Nazis. In fact, there were even assassination attempts against Hitler to stop him from implementing his evil policies. But those attempts failed.
