Many saint poets inspired the people of Maharashtra from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century. These saint poets preached their teachings in Marathi which was easy for the common people to understand. Some important saints of this period were Namdev, Eknath, Jnaneshwar, and Tukaram.
They also believed in the idea that god resides in the hearts of all the people. The saints in Maharashtra did not believe in ritualism and caste system. They even did not believe in the idea that world should be renounced in order to gain salvation.
